Public and private-sector organizations of many types and sizes operate fleets of vehicles and motorized equipment to fulfill their missions. Whether to meet the mobility needs of employees or customers; facilitate the delivery of goods and materials; underpin law enforcement or national defense missions; or support manufacturing, construction, utility, public works, or other services, fleet management is a vital but often underappreciated and oversimplified area of endeavor for many enterprises. |
| |
Sound decisions come from good intelligence and weighing a number of requisite factors. The critical element in optimizing fleet lifecycle costs is determining vehicle ownership economics and replacement intervals and methods. The process begins with vehicle selection and acquisition and ends with disposition and replacement.
The foundation for that is identifying transportation and operational requirements, and then evaluating the best ways of meeting those essentials. Once the vehicles are acquired, the appropriate maintenance and servicing schedule for each vehicle must be developed and followed. When vehicles are managed correctly, a fleet can benefit from savings through optimal lifecycle cost due to more efficient vehicle operation, reduced downtime, improved safety, greater driver satisfaction and higher resale and/ or trade-in values.
Below are additional resources and information to assist state entities with better managing their fleet. |
