How to Dispose of Surplus Books
Books are typically surplus items that sell well. However, books may appreciate in value over time, or may become obsolete. Agencies should add books to AssetWorks for disposal as quickly as possible and separate these by genre. Clear photos and inventory information on an additional sheet that includes title, author and ISBN is required.
Books will be posted for redistribution to other state entities, local governments, or eligible nonprofit organizations. Any books that don't redistribute will be posted for sale. Books that are damaged, in poor condition, and cannot be reused may be recycled.
- Clear photos of the books before they are boxed
- An inventory sheet, including each book's title (and edition, if applicable), author, ISBN, and publish date
- Information about the condition of the book (e.g., some wear from handling, missing pages, etc.)
- Log into AssetWorks and create a Surplus request, entering the books as new assets and adding all relevant information. (See the AssetWorks User Guide Appendix E for more detailed user instructions.)
- Once the asset is saved, attach photos and the inventory sheet to docs/images.
- The receiver is responsible for all packaging and loading.
